Preface: Edward Byllinge, a partner with John Fenwick in the early
settlement of West New Jersey became financially embarrassed in 1675 and
sold his interests to William Penn, Gawel Lawire and Nicholas Lucas -
three quakers who divided his interests into 100 shares and from which
sale received enough to pay Edward's creditors in full. The owners of
      these shares became the "proprietors."
