Mosquito Cove Proprietors Book - Robert R. Coles
One of these, dated 1678 January 16, is a true copy of a document sent
to Governor Andros. It states, in essence, that the Indians felt they had
been wronged in the survey of the lands made by a Mr. Rider to determine
the property lines described in the Andros Patent. And it tells further
that Joseph Carpenter invited several of the Matinecock chiefs to his
home, where he showed them the survey and read the description of the
boundaries as given in the patent, after which they were satisfied that
they had been mistaken. This document was signed with the marks of
Arumpas, Suskaneman and Werough, of the Matinecock Chieftaincy, and the
signatures of Joseph Carpenter, Thomas Townsend, Job Wright, and
Isack Douty were appended, as witnesses. Another is a true copy of a
deed, dated 1681 January 14. It confirms the sale of land at Littleworth
(now part of Sea Cliff) to Richard Kirby, Jacob Brookin, George Downing,
and Robert Godfree, and is signed by the Musquito Cove Proprietors. That
land had been included in Joseph Carpenters original purchase from the
Indians, but they resold it to the men above mentioned, and when the
rightful owners learned of the sale they demanded payment from the
      purchasers.

1989 NJ, Cape May Co., Upper Twp. published a book called "A History of
Upper Twp. & Its Villages." It has numberous Godfreys and a picture of
Philip Godfrey's House ca. 1740. It was moved 1962 from Swainton to
      Seaville.
Carolyn says more in her letter about Godfreys.
This is a weak link. The timing is about right for the Elizabeth
Godfrey who married Archibald Campbell. The location is near. If DOBs of
Philip Godfrey & Ruth Osborne children is ever found, that will confirm or
      deny this supposition. RWC75

Died in the Hospital, in New York, on Saturday July 14th, of the Yellow
Fever, Mr. James Godfrey, of Turkeyhoe, Cumb. County, in the 40th year of
his age. Thus a kind husband, an indulgent father and a worthy citizen,
been cut off in the midst of his usefulness, by that destroyer and scourge
of mankind - from whose unrelentling grasp scarcely a victim escapes. Had
he died surroundeb by his family and friends there would have been this
consolation, that the companion of his youth and partner of his joys and
cares, was present to administer the cooling draught to quench the thirst
of his fevered and parched tongue, and the sweet consolation of her
presense to ease his distrubed brain.
