   n. Apparently John, realizing he was not to have any children by Hannah
      Merseilles, had two daughters by Lavinia Haas and wrote the following will
      to leave them legacies.

      In the name of God Amen ~ I John Doughty of the District of Moyamensing in
      the County of Philadelphia, Manufacturer being in perfect health of body,
      and Sanity of Mind and being sensible of the uncertainty of Mortal life
      and all things therein connected and impressed with a sense of duty I owe
      to those who are dependant on me, I do hereby declare and acknowledge this
      instrument of writing to be my last Will and testament ~
      Item 1st. It is my will that any funeral expenses (which I hope may be
      moderate) shall be paid as soon as possible after my decease.
      Item 2nd. I will also that all my just debts shall be paid as soon as
      practicable without subjecting my property to a sacrifice ... thereby
      injuring my children and their mother.
      Item 3rd. I give and bequeath to Lavinia Haas daughter of Jacob Haas ...
      Mount Airy, Philadelphia County (and who is the mother of my children)
      Five Hundred Dollars for her sole use and behoof forever, and also so much
      of my household furniture as may be necessary for the comfort of herself
      and my Children.
      Item 45th.  All the residue of my property whether in goods, wares,
      merchandise, monies, Policies of insurance or other personal property, It
      is my will shall so be disposed of as to form a consolidated fund and put
      at interest yielding if possible Six percent per Annum and I hereby give
      and bequeath the same to my Children born of the above named Lavinia Haas,
      say Mary born February the 21st, 1842 and Lavinia born June 11, 1845, the
      above named residuary estate, on the terms following to wit.  The interest
      of the within named fund is to be applied to their education and their
      support jointly with their mother, until each child or attain the age of
      twenty one years, after all the children alone are to receive and enjoy
      said interest, until they each attain the further age of Thirty years at
      which time and not until then is the principal to be used on any account
      whatever and when these children shall so have attained the age each of
      Thirty years, the principal is to be divided between them in equal
      proportions and only on their respective orders in writing.  Should
      however, one survive the other, the survivor is to receive the whold on
      the terms and principles above allowed to them jointly.  But should both
      children die before they attain the age of twenty one years, then it is my
      will that their mother the said Lavinia Haas shall receive One thousand
      dollars in lieu of the Five hundred Dollars mentioned in item 3rd.
         In witness of the above I have hereunto set my hand and seal this
      fifteenth day of June in the year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred
      and forty-six.

      Know all men by these Presents that I Lavinia Doughty of the City of
      Philadelphia, Widow, being about to undergo a surgical operation in the
      hospital and being of sound and disposing mind amd memory do make and
      publish this my last will and testament hereby revoking all former wills
      by me at any time heretofore made.
         First I direct that my body be decently interred in Monument Cemetery
      by the side of my deceased husband and that all my funeral expenses and
      just debts shall be paid by my executor hereinafter named as soon after
      my decease shall be convenient.
         Item: I give and bequeath unto my sister Mary Matilda Haas of New York
      City such of my wearing apparel and clothing as she may desire.
         Item: I give and bequeath to my Grand Daughter Mrs. Irene Conover such
      of my clothing and wearing apparel as my sister Mrs. Haas may not desire
      and the Oio Portrait of myself and husband and also my Cameo Bracelet.
         Item: I give and bequeath to my GrandDaughter Laura L. Doughty my Gold
      Watch.
         Item: I give devise and bequeath to my Daughter Mrs. Levenia Kyle the
      property situate 3209 Dakota Street in the 28th Ward of the City of
      Philadelphia.
         Item: I give devise and bequeath to my son John Edward Doughty the
      property situate 1627 Beck Street, the Ground Rent on property 1840
      Garrett Street, my lot in Monument Cemetary, my household goods and all
      the rest and residue of my Estate real, personal and mixed of which I may
      die seized and possessed and not hereinbefore disposed of (Lavinia
      Doughty).
         I nominate and appoint my son to be the executor of this my last Will
      and Testament.
         I do hereby declare my will to be, that if any person or persons to
      whom my estate or interest is given or limited by this my will, shall in
      any Court of law or equity or other devise, controvert the same, or
      dispute or call in question the validity hereof, or of any of the estates
      or dispositions hereby given; or make, or herein contained, then and in
      such cases the estates, interests so hereby given to or in favor of such
      person or persons as controverting my said will, shall sease, determine,
      and be absolutly void to all intents and purposes whatsoever, as if such
      person or persons was or were naturally dead.  And then and from
      thenceforth such estates, interests and dispositions shall go and belong
      to and be vested in the person or persons who, by virtue of this my will
      shall be next in remainder after the person or persons do disputing as
      aforesaid: Provided he, she, or they shall not controvert or dispute the
      validity of this my will, or any of the devises provisor or dispositions
      herein contained or hereby made.
         In Testimony whereof I the said Lavinia Doughty have to this my last
      Will and Testament contained on two sheets of paper and on every sheet
      thereof I have subscribed my name and affixed my seal this 18th day of
      March A.D. 1898,        Lavinia Doughty  {seal}
         Signed, sealed, Published and declared by the said Lavinia Doughty as
      and for her last Will and Testament in the presence of us who at her
      request and in his presence and in the presence of each other have
      subscribed our names as witnesses thereto.
