                          ------- 1621 --------
"On the 11th of November, 1621, the ship Fortune arrived at Plymouth,
Mass., from London. She followed the Mayflower, bringing over the parts
of families left behind by those who came in that famous vessel the year
      before.
In the Fortune, with this second body of Puritans, came Robert Hicks,
the ancestor of the family in America. He was a leather-dresser from
Bermondsey Street, Southwark, London. His father James Hicks, was
lineally descended from Ellis Hicks, who was Knighted by Edward, the Black
Prince, on the battle-field of Poietiers, (1356 Sep 9th) for bravery in
capturing a set of colors from the French.
Margaret, the wife of Robert Hicks, and her children, came over in the
ship Ann, which arrived at Plymouth during the latter part of 1622 Jun.
The family settled in Duxbury, Mass., but two of the sons, John and
Stephen, subsequently (about 1642,) came to Long Island." - pasted on
page with Hicks - Coat of Arms - rwc75. Most of this lineage is derived
from notes pasted on pages in this book - rwc75.

If thou art borrowed by a friend,
             Right welcome shall he be
To read, to study, -NOT TO LEND,-
             But to return to me,
          Not that imparted learning doth
             Diminish wisdom's store,
But books, I find when once they're lent,
             Return to me no more.

      >From the book "HISTORY OF BUCKS CO., PA"
THE Hicks FAMILY of Bucks Co., PA descended from Pilgrim stock, their
first American progenitor being Robert Hicks, who landed at Plymouth, Mass.
1621 Nov 11, having sailed from London on the ship "FORTUNE", which
      followed the Mayflower.
The family of Robert Hicks were natives of Gloucestshire, England and
traced their ancestry in an unbroken line to Sir Ellis Hicks who was
knighted by Edward, the Black Prince on the battlefield of Poitiers, 1356
      Sept. 9.
Robert Hicks settled in Duxbury, Mass. and died there at an advanced
age. His sons Stephen and John in 1642 joined an English Co.which acquired
by Patent an extensive tract of land about Hemstead and Flushing, Long
Island. Stephen Hicks purchased several thousand acres of Little Neck,
Long Island and erected a large Mansion and lived to an advanced age
      without leaving any male descendants.
John Hicks settled at Hempstead and from him are descended the extensive
names of the family of that name on Long Island, NY, Phila. and Bucks Co.,
PA, as well as many other parts of the Union. He was educated at Oxford
and was a man of intelligence who soon became a leader in the youthful
colonies. His only son THOMAS Hicks, was the first judge of NY and
obtained a patent for four thousand acres of land in Great Neck, Long
Island and lived there in English Manorial Style. His first wife was Mary
WASHBURN, by whom he had two sons, Thomas and Jacob, the latter who was
the father of the famous Quaker preacher, Elias Hicks, founder of that
branch of the Soc. of Friends known to the day as "Hicksites." Judge Hicks
      m. 2nd Mary DOUGHTY, by whom he had 10 children ~ six sons:
Isaac, William, Stephen, John Charles, Benjamin and four Dtrs: Phebe ,
Charity, Mary and Elizabeth. (A paragraph in the New York Post Boy of
1749 January 26, in referring to the death of Judge Hicks, says: "he left
behind him of his own offspring above three hundred children,
      grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren."
He died in his 100th year.
Isaac Hicks, eldest son of the Judge, by his second marriage with Mary
DOUGHTY, was like his father prominent in public affairs. He was judge
of Queen Co., Long Island in the years 1730 - 1738 and a member of the
colonial assembly of NY 1716 to 1730. He married Elizabeth MOORE and they
      had 11 children: nine sons:
Charles, Benjamin, Isaac, Gilbert, James, Thomas, Henry, John and Edward,
and two Dtr. Margaret and Mary.
Gilbert Hicks, fourth son of Isaac and Elizabeth MOORE, was born 1720
September 19 in Queens Co., NY and married 1746 April 24 Mary RODMAN
      (b. 1717 Feb. 17, dtr. of Joseph Rodman) They were the ancestors of all
the Hicks in Bucks Co., PA. Joseph Rodman gave them 600 acres of land in
Bensalem Twp. on the Neshaminy creek 20 miles northeast of Phila. They
came in 1747 and made their home in a log house. Gilbert Hicks was
commissioned by the Gov. and Council as one of the Justices of the Peace
for Bucks Co and 1761 May 11, he was commissioned chief justice of the
      court of common pleas.
      They had 5 children:
Isaac Hicks ~ b. April 21, 1748 who m. his first cousin Catherine Hicks,
dtr of Col. Edward Hicks and Violetta RICKETTS of NJ
