      Edward P. Morris
Edward P. Morris was born in Philadelphia , Pa. Jan. 6, 1849, and died
near Ray, Ill., Jan. 21, 1913, at 10 p.m., aged 67 years and 15 days.
Mr. Morris was the eldest child of a family of thirteen children, eight
of whom are living, four brothers and his father and mother having
preceded him to the better world.
He was a good citizen, tried and true, and believed that times of peace
required the same patriotic spirit as does times of war, and he was
himself a living example of this principle, as he was deeply interested
in the politics of his country, and also had enrolled his name on the
union side, by bareing his breast to the bullets of the enemy, on the
records of that noble order, the Grand Army of the Republic.
When the war clouds seemed about to smother our land from the face of
the earth, it was then that he, a lad of eighteen, answered his country's
call to arms, and he enlisted June 15, 1863, in Company E., 31st Reg.
Pennsylvania, and was discharged from service on account of expiration of
      time Aug. 7, 1863, but immediately re-enlisted in Company C., 19th
Pennsylvania and served honorably, until discharged may 14, 1866, at New
Orleans, La. He then returned home and remained until 1867, when he came
west and settled near Browning, Ill., and from there moved to Ray, Ill.,
where he assisted in building the C. B. & Q. railroad from Vermont to
Rushville and then engaged in farming.
Mr. Morris was united in marriage on Jan. 3, 1871, to Nancy L. Aten,
eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Aten of Ray, Ill. To this union
were born eleven children, all of whom are living except a son John L.,
who died at the age of two years. The surviving sons and daughters are:
Robert F. Morris, Flora Elizabeth Phillips, and Harry P. Morris of Ray,
Ill.; Ophelia J. Taylor of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; Lynia Grace Lammerts,
Bertha F. Phillips and Edward Page Morris of Roseville, Ill.; Lulu Myrtle
Lammerts of Swan Creek, Ill.; Bernice M. Jones and Tessie E. Sparks of
Rushville. Besides these he leaves twenty-three grandchildren and many
other relatives and friends who mourn the loss of a kind and affectionate
husband, a loving and indulgent father and a true and warm friend.
He was converted about thirty-six years ago, and Methodists being the
choice of his faith, he united with that church at Ray and was one of the
most faithful attendants and supporters until affliction overtook him.
This did not lessen his zeal for the cause of the church, but made it
possible for him to five his personal attention upon the means of grace.
During the past twenty-eight years he was an invalid, and during the past
six years has suffered six paralytic strokes, the last one causing him to
lose his speech, but during it all he with stood them bravely and with
patience like Paul, it may b Said he fought a good fight. He trusted
implicitly in his Redeemer, who at all times bore him up and from that
dear one, his wife, who years ago he had promised to love and cherish, it
was his to receive the beautiful gifts from her hands of the best that can
be bestowed upon one mortal by another, that of the care, love and
unrequited watchfulness. When earthly things become a burden to the
oppressed and afflicted ever his faithful companion gave to him, thru his
long sickness, her time thru the day as well as thru the long weary hours
of the night, and during the last week of his life she was made to rejoice
that as his last hours were drawing near that his soul was in perfect
peace and that he rejoiced, for soon he would be at home with his maker,
there to be and wait for the day when she should be permitted to meet and
      remain with him forever.
Funeral services were held from the M.E. church at Ray, Friday at 11
o'clock a.m. by the pastor, Rev. Cox. C. A. Lantz sang very impressibly a
beautiful solo, after which the remains were taken, followed by a large
number of relatives and friends, to Vermont on the 1:30 train, here the
body was interred in Vermont Cemetery.

It is not enough to educate. There must be goals afterward.
The most significant of those goals should be space.
Earth and humanitarian projects should be right behind,
with the space effort guiding all others.
