Surname File Format

Column 1 Should be only the Given (first) name and followed by additional names and a Surname with a generation. The first character should always be a capital letter or an underbar _ (as in unknown or fill in the blank.) There are no blank lines until the end of the information pertaining to this individual. Column 2 Preceeded by a blank in column 1, a 'w' starts the word 'with' and signifies the following lines up to a blank line contain children's names and birthdates or _ for an unknown name representing a child known to have existed. Census records also use column 2 as an initial column but always with a capital letter preceeded by a blank that is in column 1. Column 4 Preceeded by three blanks - ie. columns 1-3, the following character groups mean: bm - born male or female (most recent preceeding) bf mm - married mf wm - will of male (most recent preceeding) wf dm - death of male (most recent preceeding) df - female ld YYYY Mon DD Where_filed, book, page, additional filing information.
